Healthcare
Protecting public health, especially from chronic diseases, is a growing economic concern and national healthcare systems are under increasing pressure to cope. The EU has an increasing role in promoting public health through policy initiatives and research.
EU research policy and trends
The EU has immense power to stimulate and support interdisciplinary, collaborative research, both by funding and policy initiatives. It has set the target of spending 3% of EU GDP on research by 2010. R&D and innovation are seen as the key to a more prosperous Europe.
Business and the individual
Regulatory changes as part of the Internal Market Programme have made it significantly easier for companies to operate effectively across borders within the EU. The individual consumer’s rights are extensively protected by legislation and other initiatives in many areas, including food safety, public health and financial services.
